Hilal, TP Mazembe play to barren draw in Omdurman

Sudan’s Al Hilal and DR Congo giants TP Mazembe played out to a goalless draw in their Total CAF Champions League Group B match in Omdurman on Wednesday.

The result sees Mazembe pick their second point, having also played to the same result against CR Belouizdad in their opening game. Hilal picked their first point of the competition having lost 2-0 to former champions Mamelodi Sundowns in their first match.

In a game that didn’t have many scoring opportunities, Hilal will rue missing out on maximizing their home advantage. They threatened from set pieces in the opening half, but none could provide any much danger to give in the opening goal.

In the second half, the tempo was raised by an inch, with the visitors coming close on the hour mark. Joseph Ochaya slashed in a beautiful cross from the left, but Isaac Tshibangu could not connect the ball on target.

A minute on the turn, Hilal gave the Mazembe keeper some work, Mohamed Yousif breaking into the box from the left with some good stepovers but his low shot was blocked by the keeper with the defense clearing the mess away.

In the 66th minute, Tshibangu was once again at the end of a Mazembe chance, this time doing everything good to find space from distance but his eventual shot was awry. Mame Ndiaye was later sent through on goal from midfield, but he couldn’t beat the keeper from a tight angle.

Hilal made changes to spice their attack. Waleed Bakhiet and Samawal Merghani coming on for Ndiaye and Jamaican Alvas Powell. They later brought on Nazar Hamid and Abdelrazig Omer, but still couldn’t make any much progress in the final third.

The closest they came was when Bakhiet’s shot from the right was saved by the keeper.

Mazembe had to finish the match with 10 men after Cedrick Zemba was sent off following a second bookable offense for time wasting.
