Wydad beat Horoya to stretch Group B lead

On form Ayoub El Kaabi scored a goal and provided an assist as Wydad Club Athletic maintained their winning run with a 2-0 victory over Horoya AC in their Group C Total CAF Champions League tie in Casablanca on Saturday.

The Moroccans opened up a five point buffer between themselves and the Guinean side who remained second in the standings. Wydad have now put themselves in prime position to book a ticket in the quarter finals.

The home side dominated the early proceedings and were gifted with the opening goal when El Kaabi, winner with Morocco at last month’s Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) scored his third consecutive group stage goal.

The Moroccan forward beat Horoya keeper Moussa Camara with an audacious bicycle kick after being picked out from a Walid El Karti cross from outside the box.

The home side continued to dominate proceedings with Aymane El Hassouni seeing his volleyed connection from a cross at the backpost hit the side netting while El Kaabi had another chance with a shot from the right that went over the bar.

Horoya had some few chances but they couldn’t make use of them. Alseny Camara had a shot from inside the box blocked while another opportunity off a cross was cleared away by the Wydad defense.

It was same story in the second half, Wydad dominating and Horoya being forced to chase. Yahya Jabrane forced a smart save off Camara five minutes after the restart when he took a shot on the half volley inside the box.

They however sealed the win in the 89th minute, Tanzanian Simon Msuva netting his second consecutive goal off the bench after being set up by El Kaabi.

Wydad held on for the victory and a third consecutive clean sheet that keeps them in prime position for a place in the last eight.
