Ayoub El Kaabi redeemed himself with a goal after missing a first half penalty as Wydad Club Athletic beat Petro Atletico 1-0 in Luanda on Tuesday to begin their Total CAF Champions League Group C campaign with victory.
The Moroccans were dominant in the opening exchanges and had several chances to score. El Kaabi, fresh from captaining Morocco to the Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) title in Cameroon had several opportunities to score, but could not maximize them.
He had a chance with a penalty in the 37th minute, but could not get the ball into the net from 12 yards out.
In the second half, the Moroccans were emphatic from the start as they sought to notch a goal to put them into a comfortable zone.
They kept the pressure and were rewarded in the 70th minute when El Kaabi made amends for his first half misses, dancing past the Angolan keeper before slapping the ball into an empty net for the opening goal.
Four minuets later, the home side had an opportunity to draw level and turn the match back on, but Job missed from the penalty spot.
Despite late pressure from the hosts, Wydad managed to guard their slim advantage and affirm their victory.
