Wydad Club Athletic guaranteed their place in the quarter finals of the Total CAF Champions League despite playing to a 0-0 draw with Guinean side Horoya on Tuesday.
Wydad dropped points for the first time in the group phase, but still remained top with 10 points, making sure of a place in the last eight.
Horoya who remained second in the group with five points was the most adventurous in attack, but they could not make their vast possession count for goals. They now have to put in an extra shift in the final two rounds to stamp their place in the quarters.
Both teams stepped up the tempo in the second half but still, poor finishing was the biggest undoing. Wydad’s prolific striker Ayoub El Kaabi had a clear chance in the 75th minute, but he could not find the target off Jabrane’s cross.
The Guinean side also had several scoring chances with the best falling on Fode Camara in the 86th minute, but he couldn’t find the back of the net as well.
Wydad booked a slot in the quarter finals with both Kaizer Chiefs and Horoya still to face each other later. Wydad entertains Kaizer Chiefs in Match day 5 while Horoya will be away to Petro de Luanda, looking for three points to take them closer to the knockout phase.
