Cote d’Ivoire forward Christian Kouame is ruled out for the rest of the ongoing Total U-23 Africa Cup of Nations after injuring his knee in the match against South Africa.
Kouame who plies his trade with Italian Serie A side Genoa was Les Elephants star to watch, after a brilliant start to the season that saw him scoring five goals and assisting three in 11 club appearances.
He featured for Cote d’Ivoire in the 1-0 opening group B victory over Nigeria, before limping off the pitch in the defeat to South Africa.
Medical tests confirmed Kouame had a ruptured knee cruciate ligament that will see him sidelined for a long period. He will miss the rest of the tournament as he’s expected to undergo a knee surgery.
Cote d’Ivoire faces Ghana in the semifinal on Tuesday (19 November 2019), with the winner automatically qualifying to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Hosts Egypt takes on South Africa in the other semifinal later on the same day.
