Host Egypt book Tokyo slot in style

Hosts Egypt proved too strong for South Africa, defeating them 3-0 at the Total U-23 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2019 semifinal on Tuesday evening at the Cairo International Stadium, to reach the final and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in style.

The Olympic Pharaohs scored three times after the break to secure their place in next year’s Olympics, and set a date against Cote d’Ivoire in the final next Friday. South Africa will face Ghana for the third place and the last Olympics ticket earlier on the same day.

The first half was a story of rare chances as both sides entered the game on a highly cautious note. After some scarce opportunities, they went to the break with a barren stalemate.

But after the break skipper Ramadan Sobhy broke the deadlock from the spot at the hour mark to send some 70000 supporters into frenzy mood.

Abdul Rahman Magdy scored a brace in quick succession at 84 and 89 minutes to confirm Egypt’s win and their place in the final.

Total Man of the Match: Ammar Hamdy (Egypt)

What they said

Ammar Hamdy, (Total Man of the match)

This trophy is rather for the whole team without the others, I could not win it. I congratulate my teammates and we make an appointment for the final with the goal of winning the trophy ''.

Shawky Gharib (Coach, Egypt)

I'm happy for my country, all we did with the players, it's for the country and the thousands of fans who have moved. I am going to thank South Africa who was a big opponent and who contributed to this qualification at the Olympics by agreeing to play two warm-up games against us.

David Notaone (Coach, South Africa)

Egypt deserves its qualification. Until the penalty, we were in place but afterwards, we must admit that we made mistakes. Now, we still have a chance to qualify for the Olympics through the classification match. We wish good luck to Egypt for the final .
