Former midfielder Ernest Mtawali has been appointed head coach of Malawi senior national team, Flames, on a one-year renewable contract.

Mtawali takes over from Young Chimodzi who was sacked in June following the Flames’ 2-1 home loss to Zimbabwe in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Malawi FA president Walter Nyamilandu unveiled Mtawali alongside his assistant Nsanzuwrimo Ramadhan at Chiwembe Technical and Development Centre, Blantyre on Saturday (1 August 2015).

Nyamilandu told the press that Mtawali had been charged with putting the Flames’ 2017 Africa Cup of Nations Cup qualifiers campaign back on track and ensuring progress in the preliminary round qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Mtawali said he was excited with the challenge which he described as an honour and privilege and promised to work hard to restored the battered image of the Flames.
