Mtawali goes for experience against Zimbabwe

Malawi coach Ernest Mtawali has opted for experience in naming his final 20-man squad travelling to Harare to face Zimbabwe on Sunday in a Group L Day Five clash.

Mtawali, who is on a rebuilding course, has left out some youngsters who played in the previous games such as Isaac Kaliyati, John Soko and Brighton Munthali from local clubs Be Forward Wanderers, Blue Eagles and Silver Strikers respectively.

Instead, he has recalled veterans Joseph Kamwendo, Peter Wadabwa and Charles Swini to beef up the midfield, striking force and goalkeeping departments respectively as the Flames eye their first win of the campaign.

“There are several factors I looked at when selecting the squad. It is not only about performance but current form, attitude and work rate in training. I want players who are ready to play for their current and have the right mentality,” Mtawali said.

Surprise inclusions in the squad are rookies Ernest Kakhobwe and Rafik Namwela who play for local clubs Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers.

Captain Limbikani Mzava who plays for Mpumalanga Black Aces in South Africa will miss the game through injury whereas there were no places for veterans Robert Ng’ambi and Chimango Kayira.

Malawi has bagged a disappointing two points from five games and only stand a mathematical chance of qualifying for next year’s finals in Gabon.

Zimbabwe’s chances are brighter as they lead with eight points followed by Guinea on five points at par with third-place Swaziland. Zimbabwe can sail through if Guinea fails to win in Swaziland over the weekend.
