2024 CAF Women’s Champions League AS FAR Vs Aigles de la Medina

This will be the first meeting between the two clubs. 

AS FAR have faced WAFU members clubs in previous editions of the finals, their record against teams from the west of the continent reads P7 W5 D0 L2. 

AS FAR’s previous clashes against WAFU member clubs have seen them win five games and lose just two games, both against Ghanaian opponents Hasaacas Ladies in the 2021 Semi-finals and Ampem Darkoa in their opening game in 2023. Both games ending 2-1.

Featuring in their 16th game at the finals Aigles de la Medina will become the 13th different club that AS FAR will face at the finals. 

While Aigles de la Medina are the first Senegalese team that AS FAR will face at the finals they are the fifth WAFU member nation against whose clubs they will have come up against. 

AS FAR have previously faced clubs from WAFU member nations including Ghana, Liberia, Mali and Nigeria. They have faced two different Ghanaian and Nigerian clubs. 

Excluding the 2021 edition when all teams were making their tournament debut, this will be AS FAR’s 8th game against a debutant across the 2022 and 2023 editions. Their record including two games against Ampem Darkoa in 2023 reads W7 D0 L1.  

Across the 2022 and 2023 edition  of the CAFWCL AS FAR have defeated six tournament debutants, including Determine Girls of Liberia, Green Buffaloes of Zambia, Simba Queens of Tanzania, Bayelsa Queens of Nigeria, Hurucanes of Equatorial Guinea, AS Mande of Mali, and Ampem Darkoa of Ghana. 

Senegal will become the 10th different nation against whose clubs AS FAR will have faced at the finals along with clubs from Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia. 

Aigles de la Medina are the 13th different club that AS FAR will have faced at the finals, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have also faced 13 clubs at the finals. 

 

AS FAR 

 

Are making their fourth appearance at the finals the only team along with Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies to have been at each edition since 2021. 

Champions in 2022 defeating current champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the final. 

Have reached at least the semi-finals on each of their previous three finals appearances, ending third in 2021, champions in 2022 and third in 2023. 

Qualified as hosts also won the UNAF Zonal Qualifiers. 

Along with Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies they are the only other team to have won the title doing so in 2022. 

Along with Mamelodi Sundowns ladies are the only other team to have ended in the top three in all previous editions. 

AS FAR are playing in their 16th game at the finals their record reads P15 W11 D1 L3 GF23 GA9.

AS FAR’s 23 goals at the finals have been scored by 12 different players. 

AS FAR have only been involved in a drawn game once at the finals in their final group game of 2021 against Mamelodi Sundowns, the game ended 0-0. Since then their last 12 games have produced a winner.

AS FAR’s record in their opening game of the tournament reads P3 W2 D0 L1. 

In their opening game of the finals AS FAR have won two of their previous three games, defeating Rivers Angels of Nigeria 3-0 in 2021 and then Simba Queens of Tanzania 1-0 in 2022. At the 2023 finals they lost to Ghanaian club Ampem Darkoa 2-1 despite initially taking the lead in the game. 

Coach Mohamed Amine Alioua leads AS FAR into their third finals he was at the helm when they won in 2022. AS FAR were coached by Abdallah Haidamou when they ended third in their debut appearance in 2021. 

Fatima Tagnaout remains the only player to have scored in all three editions of the finals for AS FAR.

Tagnaout is AS FAR’s second highest scorer at the finals with five goals, Ibtissam Jraidi with six goals at the 2022 edition which included a hattrick in that editions final, is their all- time top scorer at the finals.  

The host club has never previously lost their opening game at the finals, in 2021 Wadi Degla of Egypt won 3-1 against Malian side AS Manade, while AS FAR won 1-0 against Simba Queens in 2022. At the last edition in 2023 Athletico FC Abidjan drew 1-1 with SC Casablanca. 

AS FAR in 2022 are the only host club to have progressed beyond the group stages, Wadi Degla in 2021 and A

AS FAR have won the Moroccan top flight on 11 occasions including in the last 9 seasons in a row. 

AS FAR have won their opening four league games of their current league season in the Moroccan top flight. 

 

Aigles de la Medina (Senegal)

 

The first Senegalese team to qualify for the finals. 

Senegal becomes the 14th different country to have a representative at the finals. 

Senegal are the fifth different nation from the WAFU region to have a representative at the finals. 

They are the 19th different team to qualify for the finals. 

Won the WAFU Zone A qualifiers to reach the finals.

Came top of their group in the WAFU Zone A qualifiers, began with a 2-0 win over Red Scorpion of Gambia, despite a 2-0 loss to Malian Club AS Mande in their second game, they then drew with host club Mogbwemo Queens of Sierra Leone 2-2. A 2-1 win in their final game against Determine Girls of Liberia secured their qualification. 

Will look to become just the third team from the WAFU region to win their first ever game at the finals, and fourth to avoid defeat in their first. 

Only two teams from the WAFU region have managed to previously win their opening game at the final, Ghanaian clubs Hasaacas Ladies and Ampem Darkoa in 2021 and 2023. The only other team from the WAFU region to avoid defeat in their first ever game was Athletico FC Abidjan who drew 1-1 with SC Casablanca in 2023. 

They are coaches by Mbayang Thiam who also has experience working with the Senegal U-20 Women’s national team.
