Mamelodi Sundowns - AS Far: The Classic

A year ago, AS Far defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 4-0 in the CAF Women's Champions League final played at the Moulay Abdallah stadium in Rabat. Since last year, a lot has happened. Affected by this defeat in the final, Mamelodi Sundowns have since made a number of recruitments to beef up their squad which has yielded incredible results for the so far in this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League.
For its part, AS Far saw its squad stabilize with executives enjoying a good run during the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™.
AS Far on the other hand had some of their players in the Moroccan side that enjoyed a fairy tale run at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup earlier this year.
With last season’s history in the tournament’s final plus both their championship pedigree, Wednesday evening’s semi-final between the two sides presents the perfect setting for an action-packed encounter at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly stadium in Korhogo.
This is what the players had to say:
Zineb Redouani, AS Far defender
“We know Mamelodi Sundowns but they also know us. We know that for this semi-final, there will be some very good football. We will play as we know how. Whether we meet them now or in the final, our goal remains the same, which is to win the final”.
Lerato Kgasago, Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder
“It’s going to be the strongest opposition we face. We are ready. We will not be in a spirit of revenge but we just want to win. We have one goal, which is to leave with this cup. Our opponent in the semi-final represents a step towards the holy grail”.
Interesting statistic:
This is the third confrontation between the two teams. Mamelodi Sundowns drew against AS Far 0-0 in 2021. Then the Moroccans beat the South Africans 4-0 in 2022.
