MATCH STATS: FAR Rabat and ASEC Mimosas meet in CAF Women’s Champions League final
FAR Rabat and ASEC Mimosas will contest the final of the fifth edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia on Friday at 19h00 local time (17h00 GMT), meeting for the first time in what promises to be a compelling clash of contrasting histories.
ASEC enter their maiden final, while AS FAR appear in their third, reaffirming Morocco’s remarkable consistency in the competition. This is also the first time ASEC will face North African opposition, and only the second time they meet a past champion after opening these finals with a 1-0 win over defending title holders TP Mazembe.
Friday’s showdown marks the 19th different opponent AS FAR have faced at the tournament, with Côte d’Ivoire becoming the 11th nation from which they encounter a club. Against West African sides they have been largely dominant, claiming six wins and suffering only two defeats, both against Ghanaian teams, Hasaacas Ladies in the 2021 Semi-final and Ampem Darkoa in the 2023 group stage.
Although AS FAR have played two finals before, this will be their first against West African opposition after previous meetings with Mamelodi Sundowns and TP Mazembe. In knockout encounters with West African teams, this is their fourth meeting; after losing to Hasaacas Ladies in 2021, they went on to beat Bayelsa Queens in the 2022 Semi-final and Ampem Darkoa in the 2023 third-place game.
This is the fifth CAF Women’s Champions League final and the fourth to feature a Moroccan side. Only in 2021 did no Moroccan club reach the showpiece. The past two finals ended with Moroccan teams as runners-up, SC Casablanca in 2023 and AS FAR in 2024, and history shows that Moroccan clubs have won once and lost twice when appearing in the decider.
All four previous finals were settled in 90 minutes, and in every instance only the winning team found the net, producing a combined 10 goals at an average of 2.5 per match. Two players have been sent off in past finals, both from Mamelodi Sundowns: Regina Mogolola late in the 2021 final and Rhoda Mulaudzi in the 34th minute of the 2022 showpiece.
AS FAR’s Zineb Erroudany has created nine chances at this year’s finals, the most by any player from the club and the second-highest overall.
