At the end of the 90 minutes, nothing could celebrate South African side Bidvest Wits and Guinean giants AC Horoya in their Total CAF Confederations Cup Group C opener at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday.
Horoya keeper Moussa Camara made a brilliant finger tip save at the stroke of fulltime to turn Gift Motupa’s acrobatic volley over for a corner, denying the Clever Boys a hard earned three points at home.
After match day one, it is all square in the group with Libya’s Al Nasr having drawn 1-1 with Djoliba in the other group match.
Chances were few and far in between as the two sides engaged in a tough encounter with none of them willing to barge to give a chance. Wits were trying to attack from width and in the 20th minute, Alton Macheke’s cross from the right rolled across the face of goal with no one to direct it home.
In the 39th minute, Horoya knocked on the door with Enoch Agyei’s shot from the right hitting the side netting as he caught the defense off its feet.
Alseny Camara also came close for Horoya in the second half forcing Wits keeper Stuart Goss to a good save with a low shot from range. Wits came close on the other end with 10 minutes of play left with Daniel Hotto’s cross from the left meeting Motupa’s header, but the keeper made a good point blank save.
The two sides will now hope for better luck on match day two with Wits going away to Djoliba while Horoya play host to Al Nasr in Conakry.
