Libya’s Ittihad managed a precious away 1-1 draw to hosts US Gendaremerie Nationale of Niger at the General Syeni Kountche Stadium in Niamey, in the first leg of the 2019-2020 Total CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round.
Both goals came as early as the tenth minute. Visitors Ittihad took the lead after six minutes via Mouayad Elgritly, before Nasser Oumarou equalized for the hosts four minutes later.
Gendarmerie tried to take the lead but their attempts were fruitless to see the game ending in a 1-1 draw. The return leg is scheduled in a fortnight in Tunisia, due to security concerns in Libya.
Ittihad coach Ivan Minnaert looked satisfied with the result. The Belgian told CAFOnline.com “We started well and scored an early goal but they managed a quick equalizer. We had more possession but didn’t manage to score. My team is still not ready for games of this level, especially against a physically strong opponent like Gendarmerie”.
“The second leg is going to be tough, but we are determined to win and reach the next round”, he concluded.
