Elshahat eyes historic triumph for Al Ahly at FIFA Intercontinental Cup

Al Ahly’s veteran midfielder, Hussein Elshahat, has set his sights on leading the Egyptian giants to an unprecedented achievement at the FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2024 in Qatar.
As Al Ahly prepares to face Mexican side Pachuca in the FIFA Challenger Cup, Elshahat's extensive experience in FIFA tournaments could prove pivotal for his team’s ambitions.
The 31-year-old midfielder, who boasts the record for most appearances in FIFA club tournaments, reflected on what it means to don Al Ahly’s iconic jersey on such a grand stage.
“Al Ahly is a giant club, and competing in tournaments like the Intercontinental Cup is in our DNA,” Elshahat said.
“This year, we’re determined to take it a step further and bring the title home for our fans.”
Al Ahly secured their place in the Challenger Cup following a commanding 3-0 victory over Al Ain in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup.
Now, a clash against Pachuca stands between them and a potential dream showdown with European champions Real Madrid in the final.

Having watched Pachuca’s dominant 3-0 win over Botafogo in the preliminary round, Elshahat is fully aware of the challenge that lies ahead.
“Pachuca showed their strength by eliminating the South American champions,” he said.
“Their quick start and ability to score three goals in the first 30 minutes were impressive. We know they are formidable opponents, but our focus is on delivering our best performance to secure the win.”
Elshahat’s journey to the Intercontinental Cup final has been a story of resilience and pride.
From facing Bayern Munich and Palmeiras to twice encountering Real Madrid, he has consistently tested himself against the world's elite.
“Playing against clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich is an honour,” Elshahat remarked.
“These matches push us to our limits and provide the opportunity to showcase African football on the global stage.”
As Al Ahly prepares for Saturday’s decisive match, the midfielder’s message is clear: “Our goal is to win both the Challenger Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. We respect every opponent, but we’re ready to fight for glory.”
