Women referees stand out at TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations

The TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations, Algeria 2023 is another opportunity for African women referees to appear at the continental level and prove their superior growth, after a recent steady rise.

A trio of promising women referees took charge of the Group A match between Somalia and Congo at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers on Tuesday, a performance that showed class and quality of the field of women referees on the continent.

Vincentia Amedome, from Togo, took charge as the center referee and was assisted by Cameroonian Carine Atezambong Fomo and Fanta Kone of Mali.

The trio shone with its management of the difficult game, receiving plaudits from all and sundry after the duel.

Amidum and her two compatriots imposed themselves perfectly in the match with spot on decisions despite the high tempo and difficulty of the match.

There are a total of 11 female referees officiating at the ongoing U17 AFCON, out of the 35 that are on duty in Algeria.

The trio are also part of the team of African referees that have been invited for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The opportunity to officiate at the U17 AFCON is a perfect platform for them to prepare for the bigger task ahead.
