Agadir set to come alive as teams starting jetting in for kick off
In the whistling cold well past 1am, a few handful Cameroonian fans were up and dancing at the Agadir Al Masira Airport, welcoming the indomitable Lions to the city that will host two of their matches at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Morocco 2025.
Cameroon has been camping in Casablanca since Sunday, and travelled to Agadir late Friday night to get into tournament mood proper. They will play two Group F matches at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir; against Gabon on Christmas Eve and Mozambique on New Year’s Eve.
“We are really delighted to follow Cameroon here to support them and we are confident that they can do well. This year, our ambition is to go all the way and win and we will back them up to do that,” said a fan identified as Stanley, who has travelled to Agadir to offer his support for the Indomitable Lions.
At the Airport in Casablanca enroute to Agadir, the Cameroonian contingent attracted football-loving fans who sought autographs on their memorabilia as well as once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to take selfies with the stars, biggest of them being Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo.
The 26-year-old forward was a favourite, and the humble off the field, dangerous on the field star made their night with his impeccable smile and warm spirit.
Agadir is slowly building to life, as it prepares to host several matches in this year’s tournament. The Adrar Stadium will host select Group B and F matches as well as a round of 16 and quarter final games.
The opening game in the city will be on Monday when Egypt takes on Zimbabwe.
Billboards all across the city, from the airport into the central business district are awash with messages reminding fans that the biggest football tournament on the continent is coming home.
