Comoros look to revive Cameroon 2021 ‘magic’ against Zambia
Comoros head into their second but already decisive Group A encounter against Zambia in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 determined to draw inspiration from the historic round-of-16 finish in their debut in Cameroon in 2021.
Competing in only their second AFCON finals, the Coelacanths are eager to prove that their breakthrough four years ago was no coincidence, but the result of sustained work, ambition and a clear footballing identity under head coach Stefano Cusin.
Despite opening their campaign with a 2–0 defeat to tournament hosts Morocco, Comoros delivered a disciplined and courageous display. Well organised and tactically committed, they matched the tempo of one of the favourites for long periods and showed a maturity that encouraged belief within the camp.
With qualification hopes now finely balanced, the Zambia fixture represents a defining moment. Victory would not only revive Comoros’ chances of reaching the knockout stages but would also echo the resilience shown in Cameroon 2021, when they progressed from the group phase against the odds.
Head coach Stefano Cusin has highlighted both the difficulty and the importance of the contest, while expressing confidence in his squad’s readiness.
“The match against Zambia will be extremely important,” Cusin said. “We are facing a team with high-quality attackers. We have prepared well, and our approach will be adapted to the way our opponents play.
“This is a very important game for us and we will be aiming to win it. The key is that the players are fully prepared. We know Zambia are a strong side, but we are determined to succeed and we are working with that objective in mind.”
Cusin is expected to once again rely on defensive organisation, quick transitions and collective discipline as Comoros look to disrupt Zambia and secure a result that would reignite their AFCON Morocco 2025 campaign.
What continues to define Comoros is the fighting spirit that underpinned their maiden AFCON appearance. That same determination remains present within the squad, driven by players who believe they can write another chapter in the nation’s football history, guided by a coach who understands how to motivate his group at decisive moments.
As the tournament unfolds, Comoros will hope that the magic of Cameroon 2021 can once again inspire them on the continental stage.
