Conde attributes Mambas’ TotalEnergies CAF AFCON qualification to sacrifice, dedication and commitment

Mozambique’s football revival has found its heartbeat in head coach Chiquinho Conde, whose leadership has transformed the Mambas into one of Africa’s most inspiring success stories.

Since taking charge, Conde has instilled discipline, belief, and structure within the national team — guiding Mozambique to back-to-back TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifications, including a historic place at the upcoming 2025 finals in Morocco.

The Mambas’ recent performances reflect a steady and deliberate rise, built on unity, tactical organisation, and renewed self-confidence.

In an exclusive interview with CAFOnline, Conde reflected on the mindset behind Mozambique’s resurgence.

“We return to this great African competition renewed, after a very positive campaign. We were in a tough group with teams like Egypt, Ghana, and Cape Verde. Although we achieved our best-ever AFCON performance, we felt we could go further. This time, our goal is to progress beyond the group stage”, said the former striker.

Finding balance between Mozambique’s natural attacking flair and the defensive discipline needed at the highest level has been central to Conde’s philosophy.

“We’ve developed a model suited to our players’ characteristics, always evolving to adapt to different opponents. Football is dynamic — and so are we,” said the 59-year-old coach.

Conde believes the team’s success is the product of resilience and unity.

“Our qualification for AFCON 2025 came through sacrifice, effort, dedication, and commitment,” he emphasised.

With several players now featuring for clubs abroad, Mozambique’s squad blends valuable experience with a new generation of emerging talent from domestic and regional competitions such as the COSAFA tournaments.

Beyond the immediate goal of advancing from their group in Morocco, Conde envisions a long-term impact for Mozambican football.

“Our qualification has reignited hope among the Mozambican people,” he reflected.

“Young players are dreaming again, and our football identity is stronger than ever. This momentum can transform our game for years to come.”

Mozambique have been drawn in a tough Group H consisting of reigning champions, Cote d’Ivoire, Cameroon and Gabon.
