Kenya to inaugurate TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2027 stadium with high-profile friendly clash in January

Kenya will officially inaugurate the 60,000-capacity Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi on 5 January 2027, with German giants Bayern Munich and Dutch club Ajax set to play a high-profile friendly ahead of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) PAMOJA 2027.

President William Ruto announced the opening date on Wednesday, confirming that the newly constructed stadium at Talanta Sports City will welcome two of Europe's most successful clubs for its inaugural match.

The venue is expected to play a major role in Kenya's preparations to co-host the continental tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania from 19 June to 17 July 2027.

The official opening will mark a significant milestone for Kenya, which is preparing to stage Africa's biggest football competition for the first time as part of a historic three-nation hosting arrangement.

Named in honour of the late former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the stadium is one of the country's major infrastructure investments ahead of AFCON and is expected to become a centrepiece of its international sporting ambitions.

Bayern Munich, six-time Champions League winners, and Ajax, who have been crowned European champions four times, will provide a prestigious opening fixture for the new facility.

Their meeting will also offer organisers an opportunity to assess the stadium's readiness to stage major international football matches just over five months before AFCON begins.

"This is more than the opening of a stadium; it is a statement of who we are and most importantly who we are becoming," President Ruto said in his announcement.

Describing the facility as a "cathedral of sport", the Kenyan leader said the stadium represented the country's determination to establish itself as a leading destination for major international sporting events.

Ruto also linked the opening to Kenya's preparations for the continental showpiece, highlighting the importance of cooperation between the three East African host nations.

"Next year, together with our brothers and sisters in Tanzania and Uganda, we will co-host AFCON under the banner of 'Pamoja 2027'," he said.

"From this stadium, our message is clear; Kenya is ready to welcome the world, Africa is ready for greatness. We are not just believers, we are doers."

The announcement follows continuing efforts to complete and prepare the stadium, which has been developed as a modern international sporting facility.

The new venue represents one of Kenya's most significant stadium construction projects since the Moi International Sports Centre at Kasarani was built ahead of the 1987 All-Africa Games.

Kasarani is also expected to play an important role in Kenya's AFCON hosting plans.

The Raila Odinga International Stadium is designed to accommodate approximately 60,000 spectators, with modern facilities for players, officials, broadcasters, journalists and supporters.

The Bayern Munich-Ajax encounter is expected to provide an important operational test of the stadium, including spectator access, security, crowd management, broadcasting arrangements and matchday logistics.

It will also offer local football supporters an opportunity to watch two of Europe's most recognisable clubs compete on Kenyan soil.

Ajax have confirmed their participation, describing the fixture as a significant occasion for football in East Africa and part of their preparations for the second half of the European season.

Further information on the friendly, including ticketing arrangements, is expected to be announced closer to the event.

The stadium's inauguration will come as preparations intensify across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

CAF officials have been conducting inspections of proposed tournament venues, training facilities, transport infrastructure and accommodation across the three countries to assess their readiness for the competition.

During an inspection visit in September, CAF officials examined the Raila Odinga International Stadium and other key facilities in Nairobi as part of the broader assessment of the region's preparations.

The stadium's completion and successful operation will be an important step towards meeting the requirements of hosting matches at Africa's flagship international football tournament.

AFCON PAMOJA 2027 will be the first edition of the competition to be jointly hosted by three nations.

It will also mark the tournament's return to East Africa for the first time since Ethiopia staged the competition in 1976.

The region gained valuable experience in organising major continental football events when Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania jointly hosted the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2025.

That tournament provided an opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the host countries and develop experience in competition organisation, security, transport and stadium operations.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will represent a considerably larger undertaking, with 24 national teams competing for the continental title.

The opening match is scheduled for 19 June 2027, with the final to be played on 17 July 2027.

While the complete match venues are yet to be announced, the Raila Odinga International Stadium is expected to be one of the principal facilities supporting Kenya's hosting responsibilities.

Its inauguration in January will therefore represent more than the opening of a new sporting facility.

For Kenya and its East African neighbours, the event will be another important milestone in preparations to welcome the continent's leading national teams and football supporters for a historic AFCON edition.
