Lesotho fight back to beat Seychelles and reach AFCON qualifying round
Lesotho produced a spirited second-half comeback to defeat Seychelles 2-1 in the second leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations PAMOJA 2027 preliminary round tie, sealing their place in the next stage of the qualifiers.
After a goalless first leg left the contest finely balanced, Seychelles looked to have seized control when they took the lead just before half-time through Brandon Labrosse in the return encounter, leaving Lesotho facing elimination.
For much of the opening period, Lesotho struggled to impose themselves, appearing second best in key duels and lacking sharpness in their approach play.
Seychelles capitalised on that uncertainty wsith Don Fanchette setting up Labrosse for the opener, punishing defensive lapses to head into the break with a crucial advantage.
But the hosts returned from the interval with renewed purpose.
Lesotho showed greater urgency and composure in possession, gradually taking control of proceedings as they pushed forward in search of a response. Their improved intensity in the final third began to stretch the Seychelles defence, and the pressure eventually told.
The equaliser arrived through Lebohang Lesako in the 50th minuteas a reward for their persistence, lifting the momentum and belief within the team.
With the tie hanging in the balance, Lesotho continued to press, displaying improved technical quality and attacking intent.
Their determination was ultimately rewarded with a second goal in the 82nd minute by Sera Motebang that completed the turnaround and put them ahead in the tie for the first time.
The comeback secured a 2-1 victory on the day and ensured Lesotho progressed from the two-legged encounter, underlining their resilience in a high-pressure situation.
Having shown both grit and attacking quality, Likuena will now look to build on this hard-earned success as they continue their campaign towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
