Their only previous encounter came at the 2004 edition during the Group Stage, when they met in their final Group B match. The game ended 1-1, with Mali taking the lead through Dramane Traoré in the 34th minute before Senegal equalised through Habib Beye in first-half stoppage time.

Both teams progressed to the Quarterfinals in 2004 when paired together in Group B, with Mali finishing as group winners and Senegal runners-up ahead of Kenya and Burkina Faso.

Overall, the sides meet for the 41st time, with Senegal leading the head-to-head with 19 wins to Mali’s eight, while 13 matches have ended in draws.

Senegal are unbeaten in their last 13 matches against Mali, recording six wins and seven draws.

Mali’s last victory over Senegal came in a friendly match on 26 November 1997, a 2-1 win in Dakar.

Their most recent meeting was also a friendly, played on 26 March 2019 in Dakar. Senegal won 2-1 with goals from Sadio Mané in the 87th and 90th minutes after Adama Traoré had given Mali the lead in the 72nd minute.
