The Taifa Stars: East Africa’s Rising Force at AFCON 2025
Led by captain Ally Samatta and creative midfielder Faisal Salum Abdallah, Tanzania’s Taifa Stars are making history at AFCON 2025 in Morocco. For the first time, they have reached the Round of 16, a milestone made even more remarkable because Ángel Miguel Gamondi took over just weeks before the tournament, yet quickly instilled belief, discipline, and structure in the team.
“To qualify is a great learning for Tanzania. The country must be proud,” Gamondi said.
“I wanted to change this mentality of underdogs…we no longer aspire only for honorable participation; we believe in our ability to go far.”

When the domestic league lifts the national team
Tanzania arrived in AFCON with confidence built over years of growth in domestic football. Clubs like Simba SC, Young Africans (Yanga SC), and Azam FC have exposed players to CAF inter-club competitions, giving them vital experience in high-pressure games.
The results have spoken for themselves: Tanzania scored in all three group matches, including a goal from Faisal Salum Abdallah, who was also influential in the last CHAN tournament. Novatus Dismas, a Turkish-based product of Azam FC, provided two assists, highlighting his attacking intelligence from the back.
In group play, Tanzania pushed three-time champions Nigeria to a narrow 2–1 defeat, held 2004 winners Tunisia to a draw, and earned a point against Uganda, runners-up in the 1978 AFCON. These performances proved Tanzania can compete with established football nations and instilled belief that the team can take on any challenge.

Togetherness and Mental Strength
The Taifa Stars embody the AFCON “Pamoja” (Togetherness) symbol, reflecting unity both on and off the pitch. Gamondi’s years in Morocco gave him perspective on handling pressure:“I lived here for years and I know the pressure the fans exert, but sometimes this pressure can also work against them.”
Under his guidance, the team has combined tactical discipline with fearless ambition — a mentality that has transformed Tanzania from hopeful outsiders to credible competitors.

Impact Players Leading the Way
Captain Ally Samatta is the team’s anchor, leading by example and providing composure in key moments. Faisal Salum Abdallah offers creativity and finishing ability in midfield, while Novatus Dismas supplies attacking support and assists. Together with other contributors, the team has shown consistency, balance, and the ability to score and create in every match.
A Historic Clash Ahead
Now, Tanzania face hosts Morocco in the Round of 16 — a formidable opponent with home support. Yet the Taifa Stars arrive unafraid, strengthened by their recent performances and united belief.
Tanzania’s rise is proof that careful domestic development, strong leadership, and a fearless mentality can propel teams to historic achievements. They are no longer chasing respect — they are earning it, together.
