With the Confederation of African Football (CAF) set to kick off the CAF African Schools Football Championship Zonal Qualifiers in Togo this week, a number of capacity building programmes are set to officially take place across all the Zones over the next few days as the competition enters the exciting Zonal qualifiers phase.

The second edition of the CAF African Schools Football Championship is already in full swing after successfully completing the National phase and building on from the solid foundation laid in its inaugural edition, CAF is pulling out all the stops in ensuring that the innovative youth development concept by CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe fulfils its objective of providing access and capacity building.

The first of many workshops kicked off on Monday, 20 November at the Stade du Kegue in Togo, who are hosts of the first African Schools Football Championship Zonal Qualifiers for the WAFU B Zone between 24 – 26 November.

A total of 60 aspirant coaches comprising of teachers from local schools and former Togolese players are currently gathered for the workshop which will see them graduate with a CAF D License Coaching course upon completion.

The coaching course forms part of other crucial capacity building initiatives being spearheaded by the CAF Member Association’s division in ensuring that the competition not only affords learners an opportunity to play competitive international football, but they along with their teachers and guardians, are sufficiently capacitated for the life on and off the field.

Speaking from the Stade du Kegue during the opening day of the coaching workshop, President of the Togolese Football Federation, Mr Kossi Akpovy expressed his gratitude to CAF and his Zone for working closely together in ensuring that local coaches receive the necessary training, as this he believes will ensure that youngsters are better coached.

“I would particularly like to express my deepest gratitude to CAF and WAFU B for their unwavering support as well as their invaluable contribution in this noble enterprise aimed at training novice coaches. Thanks to this ambitious program, these coaches will now have in their hands all the necessary skills to provide exemplary supervision to youngsters who ardently aspire for sporting success”, said Akpovy.

Other capacity building workshops scheduled to take place in Lome this week include the Young Referee’s workshop, Young Reporters Workshop and the CAF Safeguarding workshop, with more details on these initiatives to follow in due course.
