CAF marks first African Schools Programme handover in Addis Ababa

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has officially handed over a newly constructed library and administration building at Geda Robale Primary School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to mark the first handover of the CAF African Schools Football Championship Prize Money Handover Ceremonies currently underway.

The handover forms part of CAF’s Schools Football Programme to ensure that prize money awarded through the CAF African Schools Football Championship is translated into lasting investments in schools and communities across the continent.

Geda Robale Primary School from the 2022–23 prize money cycle. The investment has supported the construction of a new library and administration building, providing additional facilities for a school serving approximately 3,821 pupils.

The new library includes a main hall and a librarian’s office. The administration block comprises six offices accommodating the school’s administrative departments.

The ceremony in Addis Ababa brought together CAF representatives, football stakeholders, school leadership, pupils and members of the local community to mark the completion of the project and its official handover to the school.

CAF Director of Member Associations Sarah Mukuna said “Today is an important moment for the CAF African Schools Football Championship. What began with young boys and girls competing for the love of football has now translated into a facility that will serve thousands of pupils at Geda Robale Primary School. This is exactly the kind of lasting impact we want to see from the programme”.

“The vision of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe has always been to use football as a vehicle for opportunity and development. With the support of the Motsepe Foundation, we are seeing that vision take shape in schools and communities across Africa”, she concluded.

The CAF African Schools Football Championship was launched in 2022 as the brainchild of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe, with the Motsepe Foundation providing USD 10 million in initial funding towards the programme. The investment has supported prize money and the wider development of the competition, with prize money subsequently being channelled into infrastructure and other projects at participating schools. 

The Ethiopia handover marks the beginning of a wider series of ceremonies across Africa.
