Double victory for Uganda in CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA qualifiers

Uganda are the winners of the boys’ and girls’ categories at the CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA qualifiers which came to an end at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya on Wednesday, 13 December.

In the girls final Uganda defeated hosts Kenya 2-1. Lindey Weey Atieno gave Kenya an early lead with a well taken free kick in the first minute.

But the Ugandan team did not give up and leveled matters to make it 1-1 through Shadia Nabirye at the interval. Shaluwah Butini scored Uganda’s second goal to ensure the team booked a slot at the CAF African Schools Football Championship Continental Finals to be played in April next year.

In the Boys final, Uganda saw off Tanzania 4-2 in a match decided in penalty shootouts after a 1-1 draw in full time.

Uganda’s Simon Wanyama won the top scorer’s Award for boys, while another Ugandan player Achraf Kyakuwa was the best player.

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, Ababu Namwamba who was the chief guest thanked CAF and CECAFA for allowing the Championship to take place in Kenya.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President, Nick Mwendwa, South Sudan Football Association (SSFA), Augustino Maduot and Justus Mugisha, the First Vice President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), and FKF Vice President Doris Petra also attended the Awards ceremony.

The Zonal qualifiers for CECAFA attracted six teams in the boys’ category and five in the girls’ category.
