Perfect start for hosts Uganda in CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA Qualifiers

Hosts Uganda made a perfect start on Day 1 of the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers of the CAF African Schools Football Championship.

Uganda’s Boys’ and Girls’ teams each recorded two victories on Saturday to make their intentions clear.

In their first Group A Girls’ match played at the FUFA Stadium Kadiba, Uganda defeated Burundi 2-1. Lydia Nameseruja and Grace Kawino netted for the hosts, while Chantal Nitibitanga scored for Burundi.

Uganda brushed aside Rwanda 2-0 in their second match with Lydia Namaseruka netting a brace.

“I am very delighted that on the first day we have won all our two matches and I have managed to score three goals,” said a happy Namaseruka after the match.

Tanzania also picked two wins in the Girls’ Group B matches defeating South Sudan 2-1, and humbling Djibouti 6-0 where Sulemani Hajra scored four goals.

Ethiopia who returned to the competition after two years also had their Girl’s team recording the highest score after picking a 10-0 victory against Djibouti.

Uganda’s Boys team also kept a 100% winning record stopping Djibouti 9-0 and seeing off Kenya 7-0 in Group A matches played at the St. Marys Stadium, Kitende. Nabil Kajumba and Owen Mukisa were the lead scorers for the Ugandan team in the two matches.

Last year’s winners of the Boy’s category Tanzania got a suffered a 1-0 loss to Ethiopia, before settling for a goalless against Rwanda in their second match. Ethiopia later defeated South Sudan 2-0, while Burundi battled from a goal down to score two goals in the last six minutes to defeat Kenya 2-1.

The Djibouti Boy’s team also recorded their first victory ever in the Zonal qualifiers of the CAF African Schools Football Championship when they saw off Burundi 3-1. 

Action continues on Sunday with all the matches shifting to the St. Marys Stadium, Kitende.
