Reigning champions Senegal and Guinea emerged victorious in the final day of the CAF African Schools Football Championship WAFU-A Qualifiers held in The Gambia on Friday, 28 November.

Guinea claimed the girls’ title, while the young Teranga Lions of Senegal secured the boys’ crown as the two-day championship concluded.

The girls’ competition was played in a round-robin format featuring Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and hosts The Gambia. Guinea demonstrated remarkable consistency throughout the campaign, guided by the brilliance of Yvonne Dramou, whose performances proved decisive as they topped the table with seven points.

Guinea opened with a tightly contested 1-1 draw against The Gambia, followed by a crucial 1-0 victory over Senegal, before sealing the title emphatically with a commanding 6-0 win over Guinea-Bissau.

In the boys’ final, Senegal clinched the title after a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Guinea, following a tense goalless draw in regulation time.

The triumph marks Senegal’s successful title defense, having won last year’s edition on home soil with a 2-0 victory over neighbours The Gambia. The hosts secured bronze once again, defeating Guinea-Bissau 4-2 on penalties at the Gambinos Star Africa Complex in Mandinari.

Both Guinea and Senegal each received gold medals, trophies, and a cheque for USD 100 000 to support school football development projects.

Runners-up Senegal (girls’) and Guinea (boys’) earned USD 75,000 apiece along with silver medals, while host nation The Gambia, who finished third in both categories, collected USD 50,000 for each division.
