WAFU A champions, The Gambia ready to compete against the best at African Schools Football Championship Finals
Reigning champions of the WAFU A Zone in the Girls U-15 division of the African Schools Football Championship, The Gambia are eager to emulate their Zonal success at the upcoming CAF African Schools Football Championship Continental Finals 2024.
The much-anticipated Finals of the innovative youth football competition will take place at Zanzibar’s Amaan Stadium between 21 – 24 May and will feature Boys and Girls Zonal winners, who will compete for continental honours over the four-day contest.
Speaking to CAFOnline upon their arrival in Zanzibar, Mariama Susso said the team was looking forward to flying their nation’s flag against the best teams in Africa.
“We are representing The Gambia, this is a huge honour for myself as a coach as well as our players and entire technical team. It is something we do not take for granted because putting on this jersey means we are representing our people and their hopes” said coach Susso.
The African Schools Football Championship Continental Finals Draw will take place on Sunday, 19 May where all teams including The Gambia will be drawn into their respective groups that will determine their fate in the competition.
The draw will be attended by CAF Legends, Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo), Daniel Amokachi (Nigeria) and Amanda Dlamini (South Africa), who will also feature in the various activities scheduled to promote and support youth football development in Africa.
“We are looking forward to competing against the best. The draw will allow us to plan accordingly. The girls are determined to do well and they have been working hard ahead of this trip to Zanzibar. We want to do well but we know it will not be easy against the best teams on the continent” concluded the coach.
The CAF African Schools Football Championship is an African school’s competition that features over 44 African countries with over 800 000 participants of Boys and Girls under the age of 15.
