APR overturn first-leg deficit as Rangers survive shootout drama in TotalEnergies CAF Champions League
APR FC produced a stirring comeback to eliminate Aigles du Congo, while Nigeria's Rangers International survived a penalty shootout against AS Sobemap as two more places in the Second Preliminary Round of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League were decided on Friday.
Rwandan champions APR overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Aigles du Congo at Kigali's Amahoro Stadium, advancing 3-1 on aggregate.
Rangers endured a far more dramatic route to qualification, drawing 1-1 with Benin champions AS Sobemap after the first leg had finished by the same scoreline before prevailing 5-4 on penalties.
The results ended the continental campaigns of Aigles du Congo and AS Sobemap while keeping alive the ambitions of APR and Rangers in Africa's premier club competition.
Ouattara inspires APR comeback
APR entered their return encounter knowing they had work to do after Aigles du Congo claimed a valuable 1-0 victory in the opening leg in Lubumbashi.
The Congolese side therefore travelled to Rwanda with a narrow advantage and hopes of protecting it to progress.
Those plans began to unravel after 32 minutes.
Ouattara found the breakthrough for APR to make it 1-0 on the night and wipe out the visitors' first-leg advantage, leaving the tie level at 1-1 on aggregate.
That changed the complexion of the contest and gave the home side momentum going into the second half.
APR continued to press after the restart and were rewarded again in the 58th minute when Christian Ishimwe doubled their advantage.
The goal put the Rwandan champions 2-1 ahead on aggregate and left Aigles du Congo needing to score to rescue their Champions League campaign.
Instead, APR struck again.
Ouattara completed an influential individual performance by converting a penalty in the 78th minute, his second goal of the match putting the hosts 3-0 ahead.
There was no way back for Aigles du Congo from there as APR completed an impressive turnaround to advance 3-1 on aggregate.
It was a particularly disappointing conclusion for the Congolese side after their disciplined first-leg performance had put them in a promising position.
APR, however, demonstrated their strength at home, scoring three unanswered goals to transform a tie in which they had begun the evening behind into a comfortable aggregate victory.
Rangers hold their nerve from the spot
There was considerably more tension in the other completed tie as Rangers International needed penalties to overcome AS Sobemap.
Nothing separated the teams after their first meeting, which ended 1-1, meaning the return fixture effectively became a winner-takes-all encounter.
Rangers travelled knowing they needed an improved attacking performance against a Sobemap side that had demonstrated its organisation and discipline in the opening encounter.
But once again neither team could establish a decisive advantage.
The second leg also finished 1-1, leaving the aggregate score locked at 2-2 and forcing the contest to be settled from the penalty spot.
It was there that the Flying Antelopes finally found the decisive margin.
Rangers converted five of their penalties and prevailed 5-4 in the shootout to continue their continental journey.
The Nigerian side's composure under pressure proved crucial after 180 minutes of football had failed to separate the teams.
For Rangers, who had identified attacking players Folarin Temitope, Chimaobi Igwilo and Wisdom Ebirim among their important outlets before the encounter, progression represents another step towards their ambition of reaching the group stage.
APR and Ranger will now move into the Second Preliminary Round, where the level of competition will increase further as the race for places in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League group stage intensifies.
