Gold Stars crowned Ghana Premier League champions for the first time

Gold Stars FC have made history by clinching their first-ever Ghana Premier League title following a commanding 4-0 victory over Accra Lions on the final day of the 2024/25 season on Sunday.

The emphatic result at Dun’s Park sealed a remarkable campaign for the Bibiani-based club and confirmed their qualification for the 2025/26 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League — Africa’s premier club competition.

Abdul Farouk Amoaful set the tone just four minutes in with an early strike, sending home fans into raptures.

Kelvin Oppong extended the lead in the 19th minute before second-half goals from Samuel Kumi and Frank Amankwah completed a dominant performance.

The win gave Gold Stars a three-point cushion at the top of the table and brought a historic season to a triumphant close.

It marks a meteoric rise for a side that only gained promotion to Ghana’s top flight in 2021 and had never previously mounted a serious title challenge.

Sunday’s victory not only etched their name into the history books but also earned them a ticket to represent Ghana on the continental stage for the first time.

While celebrations erupted in Bibiani, the atmosphere was bleak for Accra Lions.

Last season’s runners-up suffered the agony of relegation, finishing 15th after a disappointing campaign marred by inconsistency. The heavy defeat confirmed their demotion from the top tier.

Nations FC Falter at the Finish Line

Title rivals Nations FC failed to capitalise on their position, falling 2-0 at home to Heart of Lions.

Goals from Samuel Boamah Quansah and Asante Sedorf ended Nations' hopes of a debut league title, forcing them to settle for second place.

Their final standing may still be subject to a pending judicial ruling.

Kotoko and Hearts Battle for Top Four Spots

Elsewhere, Asante Kotoko claimed fourth place on head-to-head advantage despite a 3-1 loss to Vision FC.

Hearts of Oak edged Samartex 1-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium but had to settle for fifth.

Medeama Stumble, Aduana Finish Strong

Last season’s champions Medeama SC concluded a turbulent campaign with a 2-1 home defeat to Berekum Chelsea.

Aduana FC ended their season on a high with a 3-1 win over Basake Holy Stars, who survived relegation in their debut season.

Dreams FC Dazzle, Young Apostles Survive

Dreams FC rounded off their campaign with a 4-1 thrashing of already-relegated Legon Cities. Bechem United edged Young Apostles 1-0, but the Apostles did enough to retain their Premier League status.

With Gold Stars now preparing for their maiden journey in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, Ghanaian football enters a new chapter, headlined by a new set of champions.
