Injury hit Al Ahly set to tackle Horoya for a place at the semis
As they are eyeing yet another semifinal appearance, Egyptian giants Al Ahly entertain Guinea's Horoya this Saturday in Cairo. Back from a first leg barren draw in Conakry last weekend, The Red Devils are hoping to reach the last four of the premier club competition when they play hosts to Guinean champions at the Cairo suburb El-Salam Stadium.
With an amazing record that saw them qualifying in every occasion after an away goalless draw, Al Ahly hope to continue on that trend and book their place to the CAF Champions League semifinals yet again. Record African champions look thirsty to extend their record to a long awaited ninth title, having last conquered the continent in 2013.
"We forgot everything regarding the first leg", Ahly coach Patrice Carteron told
But the Frenchman is facing a tough situation, especially on the defensive aspect. Defender Mohamed Naguib who replaced injured teammate Saad Samir grabbed a knee injury himself and is out for season after undergoing a surgery later. Samir himself is a doubt, with midfielder Amr Elsoleya still absent. Nigerian prolific striker Junior Ajayi is also injured and will miss the rest of this campaign.
"We will do our best to find the suitable replacements for the absentees, and I'm positive anyone who plays will give his best for the team. All we need is to focus on the game and not to underestimate our opponents (Horoya) who are a very good team. They are a young side and I believe they will have their word in the future", added Carteron who led DR Congo's TP Mazembe to the title three years ago.
Losing finalists last year, Ahly could set a thrilling last year's final replay date with title holders Wydad Athletic Club in the semifinals, as the Moroccans host Algeria's ES Setif on the back of an away 1-0 defeat. Aggregate winners of both encounters face each other in the semifinals next month.
