Petro Atlético produce stunning comeback against Scottland to reach TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Group Stage

Angola’s Petro Atlético overturned a two-goal first-leg deficit to reach the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2026/27 Group Stage with a dramatic 3-0 home victory over Zimbabwe’s Scottland FC on Friday.

Goals from Ruben, Jorge Pereira and Pedro Aparício secured a 3-2 aggregate triumph for the Angolan giants, who recovered from their surprise defeat in Zimbabwe to keep their continental ambitions alive.

Petro faced a difficult task after losing the opening leg 2-0, with former Zimbabwe internationals Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona scoring to put Scottland within reach of a memorable qualification.

However, the Angolan side produced an impressive response in the return encounter, scoring once before half-time and twice in the closing stages to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Ruben gave Petro the breakthrough in the 18th minute, reducing the aggregate deficit and providing the home side with an early boost.

The goal gave Petro renewed belief, although Scottland held on to their overall advantage heading into half-time.

The Zimbabwean club, who had impressed in the opening leg, entered the second half knowing that they were still ahead in the tie despite conceding early.

Petro continued their pursuit of a second goal and were eventually rewarded in the 67th minute when Jorge Pereira struck to level the aggregate score at 2-2.

With the tie delicately balanced, both teams faced a tense conclusion as the prospect of deciding qualification in the closing stages became increasingly likely.

The decisive moment arrived in the 85th minute when Pedro Aparício scored Petro's third goal, completing the comeback and putting the Angolan side ahead on aggregate for the first time.

Scottland were unable to respond in the remaining minutes as Petro secured their place among Africa's final 16 clubs.

The victory represents a remarkable recovery for Petro, who entered the return leg under considerable pressure after suffering one of the most surprising defeats of the Second Preliminary Round.

For Scottland, the result brings a disappointing end to their campaign after their impressive first-leg performance had placed them in a strong position to eliminate one of the continent's established clubs.

Petro now advance to the Group Stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2026/27, which is scheduled to begin at the end of November.
