Petro de Luanda secure victory on the road, Wydad continue winless start

Angola’s Petro de Luanda secured an important 2-0 away victory over ES Sahel in Tunisia to further boost their chances of progression in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League on Saturday evening.

The Angolan side continued their good start to the group campaign after last weekend’s narrow 1-0 victory over Al Hilal, with Saturday’s victory now taking them to six points at the top of Group C thanks to the brace scored by Alexandre Guedes in both halves.

This was ES Sahel’s second consecutive loss following their derby loss to ES Tunis in their opening group match last weekend.

The Group C results sees the Angolans top the group ahead of Al-Hilal and ES Tunis who are equal on 3 points, while ES Sahel languish at the bottom of the group with point to their name.

Meanwhile, the dismal group campaign start continues for Wydad Athletic Club who suffered another 1-0 loss in a simultaneous fixture against Ivorian giants, Asec Mimosas on Saturday.

The former champions have not gotten into gear in this season’s group stages after first being stunned by Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy at home last weekend ahead of Saturday’s loss to the Ivorians.

After both sides’ fair amount of chances at goal for most parts of the match, it was Sankara Karamoko’s 72ndminute strike that saw the Ivorians secure the much-needed victory that sees them top Group B ahead of Jwaneng Galaxy on goal difference.

TotalEnergies CAF Champions League action continues next weekend with Match Day 3 fixtures set to produce more drama and excitement in Africa’s premier club football competition.
