Pyramids, Mazembe and Simba claim away wins as TotalEnergies CAF Champions League ties take shape

Pyramids FC, TP Mazembe and Simba SC all secured valuable away victories on Sunday as the first legs of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League preliminary round continued across the continent.

Pyramids produced one of the strongest performances of the day, beating Kenyan champions Gor Mahia 2-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium.

W. El Karti opened the scoring after six minutes before M. Saber doubled the advantage deep into first-half stoppage time.

Gor Mahia had started brightly and threatened in the opening exchanges, but the Egyptian side settled quickly and punished defensive mistakes to take control of the tie ahead of the return leg.

Moroccan side Maghreb Fèz made one of the strongest starts of the preliminary round with a 4-1 home victory over Burkina Faso’s Rahimo FC on Sunday.

Adam Brika opened the scoring after seven minutes before Soulaïman Allouch doubled the Moroccan side’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

Rahimo pulled one back in the 60th minute, but MAS responded through Devin Titus in the 72nd minute and Christopher Ibayi four minutes later. 

The result leaves Rui Almeida’s side in a commanding position ahead of the second leg on Saturday. The winners of the tie will face either ASC Kara of Togo or Côte d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas in the next round.

TP Mazembe left Ghana with an important result after edging Medeama 1-0 in Tarkwa.

The contest appeared to be heading towards a goalless draw until Lise Nyembo Ntumba struck in the 86th minute to give the five-time African champions a narrow advantage before the second leg in Lubumbashi.

Simba SC were another side to win on the road, defeating Mighty Wanderers 1-0 in Lilongwe.

Anicet Oura scored the only goal in the 66th minute, leaving the Tanzanian giants well placed ahead of the return fixture in Dar es Salaam.

 

Elsewhere, Petro de Luanda claimed a 1-0 away victory over UD Songo, while Eagles of Congo beat APR by the same scoreline in Lubumbashi.

Soze Zemanga scored Eagles of Congo’s winner in the 45th minute, the club’s first goal in CAF interclub competition.

Mauritian debutants Cure Waves earned an encouraging 0-0 draw against South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, while Colombe Sportive du Sud were also held goalless by Stade Malien.

In Lomé, ASCK and ASEC Mimosas drew 1-1. Enock Assignon put the Togolese side ahead after 15 minutes before Ben Guel equalised five minutes before half-time.

Enugu Rangers and Sobemap also shared a 1-1 draw, while Wiliete Benguela beat Foresters FC 2-0 and Scottland FC edged Nsingizini Hotspurs 1-0.
