Sundowns face fearless Stade Malien in decisive quarter-final clash

South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns will host Mali’s Stade Malien in the first leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League quarter-final on Friday night at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, with both sides eager to seize an early advantage in the two-legged tie.

The encounter in Pretoria is expected to present a fascinating contrast between Sundowns’ continental experience and the fearless ambition of a Stade Malien side that has already exceeded expectations in this season’s competition.

Sundowns, who are targeting a third consecutive appearance in the semi-finals, come into the match as favourites.

Yet the Malian champions insist they have travelled to South Africa with belief and the determination to continue their remarkable run in Africa’s premier club competition.

Stade Malien secured their place in the quarter-finals after an impressive group-stage campaign that saw them finish strongly and claim top spot in their group. Their performance has helped reshape perceptions about the Bamako club, which had initially been labelled outsiders.

Head coach Mauril Njoya admitted that the underdog label has only served as motivation for his players.

“I remember a French journalist who described us as a small team that would simply give points away,” he said ahead of the match.

“That comment motivated us to prove people wrong, and today we are here in the quarter-finals after topping our group.”

Despite the scale of the challenge awaiting them in Pretoria, Njoya insists his side will play with freedom and confidence.

“We will play without pressure,” he explained. “We have come here to take something from the match.”

Sundowns determined to show character

While Stade Malien arrive with momentum, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes his team’s resilience and experience will prove decisive.

The South African club enters the fixture after a demanding domestic schedule that has left them with limited preparation time following a midweek league match.

However, Cardoso refused to use the circumstances as an excuse.

“Let’s not confuse things,” he said during the pre-match press conference. “I am not finding excuses. We don’t win with excuses, we win with character and attitude.”

The Portuguese coach emphasised that his players must show the same determination that helped them secure qualification for the knockout stages.

Sundowns reached the quarter-finals after defeating MC Alger 2–0 in their final group-stage match, a result that confirmed their status as one of the tournament’s strongest contenders.

That performance, according to Cardoso, demonstrated the mentality required to succeed in the latter stages of the competition.

“We know what is at stake,” he added. “We have all the conditions to play a good match and I am confident we will show our quality.”

Malian champions seek historic result

For Stade Malien, simply reaching this stage of the competition already represents a milestone. Yet the team remains determined to extend their fairytale run.

Striker Taddeus Nkeng echoed his coach’s optimism, insisting the difference between South African and Malian football will not determine the outcome.

The Cameroonian forward also spoke of the excitement of playing in South Africa for the first time.

“It has always been a dream of mine to visit this country,” Nkeng said. “But we are not only here to enjoy the moment. We are here to compete and give our best on the pitch.”

Stade Malien’s recent domestic form has been mixed, including two consecutive league defeats before their trip to Pretoria. Njoya believes this is partly due to opponents treating his team as the side to beat.

“In our league every team now plays defensively against us and waits to counterattack,” he explained. “But our ambition is not only to be a big club in Mali — we want to become a big team in Africa.”

A battle for momentum

The first leg could prove crucial in shaping the outcome of the tie, with Stade Malien set to host the return match in Bamako next week.

Sundowns will therefore be eager to build a strong advantage in front of their home supporters, while the visitors will aim to secure a positive result before the decisive second leg.

With contrasting styles, ambitions and narratives colliding at Loftus Versfeld, Friday’s match promises to deliver a compelling opening chapter in this Champions League quarter-final battle.
