First-leg battle in Algiers as Belouizdad and Zamalek eye final spot

African football’s attention turns to Algiers on Friday as CR Belouizdad host Egyptian giants Zamalek in the first leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup semi-final at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.

The tie, kicking off at 20:00 local time, brings together two ambitious sides seeking a decisive advantage in what promises to be a closely contested battle for a place in the final.

A pivotal match on the road to the final

The encounter represents a crucial step for both teams in their quest for continental glory.

CR Belouizdad, appearing in their first African semi-final in 30 years, will look to maximise home advantage and crowd support to take control of the tie ahead of the return leg in Cairo.

Zamalek, by contrast, arrive with significant continental pedigree, boasting 11 African titles, and will aim to draw on their experience to secure a positive result away from home.

Head coach Moataz Gamal underlined the challenge ahead, saying: “The teams that reach this stage are of a high level and do not get here by chance. We have studied our opponent carefully and expect an enthusiastic atmosphere.”

He added: “We are aware of the difficulty of the match, but we have the experience to deal with such situations and hope to achieve a result that will help us in Cairo.”

A contest shaped by history and motivation

Recent meetings between the two sides add an extra layer of intrigue to the fixture.

CR Belouizdad claimed victories in both legs when the teams met in the CAF Champions League group stage three years ago, a record that could fuel their confidence. For Zamalek, however, the clash presents an opportunity for redemption.

Defender Omar Gaber acknowledged the challenge, saying: “CR Belouizdad reached this stage after eliminating strong teams. We have analysed them closely and will aim for the best possible result before the return leg.”

A tactical clash between experience and ambition

The semi-final is expected to deliver a compelling tactical battle between two well-organised sides.

Zamalek’s approach is likely to rely on defensive discipline and the experience of their international players, while CR Belouizdad will seek to impose themselves with intensity and ambition on home soil.

Assistant coach Hicham Ghouzia said: “Zamalek are one of the best clubs in Africa, with strong defensive organisation and experienced players. But we have studied their weaknesses and will look to exploit them.”

Midfielder Jaber Kassis added that team spirit would be key: “We have prepared well. Even with some absences, our strength is in the collective. We want a positive result to take into the second leg.”

Home support set to play key role

A packed Nelson Mandela Stadium is expected to create a vibrant and hostile atmosphere for the visitors.

Belouizdad supporters are set to play a significant role, providing the backing their team hopes will inspire a strong performance and potentially decisive first-leg advantage.

First step in a two-legged battle

While the first leg offers an opportunity to seize control, both teams are aware that qualification will ultimately be decided over 180 minutes.

With margins expected to be fine, the outcome in Algiers could shape the direction of the tie — but the final verdict will come in Cairo.

For now, the focus is on the opening 90 minutes of what promises to be a gripping semi-final contest.
