Portuguese coach Jose Gomes has parted ways with Egyptian giants Zamalek, marking the end of a remarkable 10-month tenure during which he led the club to significant continental success.

The Cairo-based side have quickly named interim coach Ahmed Magdy to take charge alongside assistant coach Hazem Emam with important matches looming.

Zamalek are preparing to face Al-Masry in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday at the Army Stadium in Borg El Arab.

Gomes, who terminated his contract by activating a release clause requiring him to pay three months' salary, cited challenging conditions as the reason for his departure.

“It is with a heavy heart and tears streaming down my face that I write these words,” Gomes said in a heartfelt statement.

“I feel an endless love for the Egyptian people and Zamalek fans, who were instrumental in our victories. But I believe the conditions necessary to continue delivering titles are no longer in place.”

Gomes leaves Zamalek with an impressive record. Under his leadership, the White Knights played 47 matches, securing 27 victories, nine draws, and suffering just 11 defeats.

During this period, Zamalek netted 91 goals while conceding 64.

Most notably, Gomes steered the team to win the 2023-24 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup and the 2024 CAF Super Cup, cementing his legacy in the club’s storied history.

In his departure message, Gomes thanked the club’s management, players, and fans for their unwavering support. “I was fortunate to coach in Egypt and work with heroes who helped win two important titles.

"I rejected many lucrative offers because of my love for Zamalek, but I hope the club finds success and stability moving forward.”

Meanwhile, Gomes wasted no time securing his next challenge, as Saudi Arabian side Al-Fateh announced his appointment as their new head coach.

The 54-year-old has signed a contract extending until the end of the season, with an option to renew for another year.

Gomes’ departure from Zamalek marks the end of a chapter filled with triumphs and challenges, but his contributions to the Egyptian club will remain etched in the hearts of fans.
