USM Alger’s away resilience fuels belief ahead of Cairo final showdown
USM Alger will travel to Cairo believing their performances away from home this season have given them every reason to dream of lifting the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup trophy against Zamalek on Saturday.
The Algerian side hold a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg and now stand just 90 minutes away from another continental title.
While the atmosphere at Cairo International Stadium is expected to heavily favour the Egyptian giants, USM Alger’s calm and disciplined displays on the road throughout the campaign have strengthened confidence inside the Algerian camp.
Their ability to score important away goals, manage pressure and frustrate opponents has become one of the defining features of their run to the final. Against a Zamalek side renowned for dramatic comebacks in Cairo, USM Alger believe their experience and resilience can help them complete the job.
The Algerian club have produced a mixed but effective away record in this season’s competition. In six away matches, USM Alger have recorded two wins, two draws and two defeats — results that underline their capacity to compete in difficult environments across the continent.
Their campaign away from home began with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Plateau United of Ivory Coast during the preliminary stages. However, they quickly improved in the group phase, securing an important 1-0 victory over Morocco’s Olympic Safi before defeating San Pedro 3-2 in another high-scoring encounter away from Algeria. A goalless draw against Djoliba in Mali further highlighted the team’s tactical flexibility.
Even during the knockout stages, USM Alger showed they could survive difficult moments on the road. They lost 2-1 away to Maniema in the quarter-finals but recovered strongly in the return leg, while their 1-1 draw away to Olympic Safi in the semi-finals ultimately secured qualification for the final on away goals.
Their performances against Egyptian sides also provide encouragement ahead of the trip to Cairo. USM Alger are unbeaten in their last three CAF Confederation Cup matches against Egyptian opposition, winning two and drawing one while keeping clean sheets in all three encounters.
The first leg in Algiers also showed the attacking confidence of the Algerian side. USM attempted 23 shots against Zamalek — the highest number recorded by any team in a Confederation Cup final in recent years. The aggressive display reflected a side unafraid to attack even against one of Africa’s most experienced clubs.
Midfielder Ahmed Khaldi has emerged as one of the key figures behind the club’s success. His late penalty winner in the first leg took his tally to four goals this season, making him one of the competition’s leading scorers.
USM Alger have also become increasingly dangerous from set-pieces, with three of their last four goals coming from the penalty spot.
However, the Algerians are also aware of the scale of the challenge awaiting them. Zamalek have lost only one of their last 24 home games in the Confederation Cup and have built a reputation for recovering from first-leg setbacks in continental finals.
Yet USM Alger’s journey this season has been built on composure under pressure. Their away form, defensive discipline and growing confidence now leave them believing they can withstand the Cairo atmosphere and write another memorable chapter in the club’s continental history.
