ZED and Al-Ahli Tripoli take control as Confederation Cup preliminary round first legs conclude

The first legs of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round concluded on Sunday, with ZED FC, Al-Ahli Tripoli and Singida Black Stars among the sides taking commanding advantages into next week’s return matches.

Egypt’s ZED FC produced one of the biggest wins of the round, beating ASAS Djibouti Telecom 4-0 at home to put themselves firmly in control of their tie.

Al-Ahli Tripoli were equally impressive on the road, claiming a 3-0 victory over KMKM of Zanzibar to strengthen their chances of reaching the next stage.

Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars delivered the most emphatic result, thrashing Al Ghazala Wau 7-1 away from home.

Uganda’s Kitara also secured an important 2-1 away win over Mogadishu City, leaving them well placed ahead of the second leg and closer to a potential meeting with Al Ahly in the next round.

Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto won 2-0 away to Green Mamba, while Shooting Stars of Nigeria edged Tunisia’s CS Sfaxien 1-0.

There were also strong victories for ASKO D'Kara, who beat AS ZAM 5-0, and El Kanemi Warriors, who defeated Odeba 3-0.

Elsewhere, Nations FC of Ghana suffered a 1-0 defeat away to FC Diarra, while Tusker of Kenya drew 2-2 with Al-Ahli Madani in Sudan.

The tie between DC Virunga of DR Congo and BTL Bazar of Seychelles did not take place after the visiting side declined to travel because of concerns over the Ebola outbreak.

The return legs of the first preliminary round will be played between 11 and 13 September, with places in the next stage still up for grabs across the continent.
