TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup – Mamelodi Sundowns chasing continental domination
South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns enter the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup on 8 November 2026, at their home Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa, looking to assert their dominance on the big stage and bag their second CAF Super Cup title.
The “Brazilians” won the 2017 edition beating DR Congo's TP Mazembe 1-0, and they would like to have another crowning moment when they face Algeria’s USM Alger this Sunday.

How they reached the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup
Mamelodi Sundowns earned their place in this year's edition through a stellar championship run in the 2025–26 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League. They started their campaign from the 2nd Preliminary Round, delivering an early warning to the rest of the continent by dismantling Nigerian side Remo Stars 7-1 on aggregate to secure their group stage spot.
Sundowns progressed from Group C alongside Sudan’s Al Hilal, finishing ahead of Algerian side MC Alger, and DR Congo's Saint-Eloi Lupopo. It was a tough group run that required a vital final-matchday brace from Brayan Leon against MC Alger to secure qualification.
In the quarterfinals, Mamelodi Sundowns built a commanding 3-0 home advantage over Mali's Stade Malien. Despite facing an early scare in Bamako by trailing 2-0 at halftime, they held firm to advance 3-2 on aggregate. The semifinals saw them produce clinical displays against Esperance de Tunis, recording identical 1-0 victories both away in Tunis and back home in Pretoria to march into the final.
The grand finale pitted Mamelodi Sundowns against Moroccan powerhouses AS FAR. Aubrey Modiba scored the only goal in a tense 1-0 first leg win in Pretoria, before a decisive first-half injury-time strike from Teboho Mokoena ensured the return leg to end in a 1-1 draw that earned “The Brazilians” their second CAF Champions League crown, and to book their ticket to the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup.
History in CAF Super Cup
Mamelodi Sundowns appears in the TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup for the second time, boasting a perfect record in this competition. Their previous appearance dates to 2017 following their maiden Champions League triumph, where a lone goal was enough to defeat TP Mazembe. Now playing in front of their home fans at Loftus Versfeld, they aim to preserve that flawless record.

Current Season
Mamelodi Sundowns enter the match deep into their domestic season. After claiming the MTN8 crown last month, they top the South African Premiership standings after 10 matches, having collected 26 points, one more than rivals Orlando Pirates who have a game in hand.
The heartbreak came when they were forced out of this season’s CAF Champions League, losing the 2nd Preliminary Round tie on away goals to Angola’s Wiliete SC. They will shift attention now to compensation through the TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup.

Head Coach: Miguel Cardoso
Leading Mamelodi Sundowns since December 2024, Portuguese head coach Miguel Cardoso wants to add another title to his honors list that includes the Premiership, CAF Champions League, MTN 8 and the FIFA African Asian-Pacific Cup.
Cardoso managerial career includes the likes of Rio Ave, Nantes, Celta Vigo and AEK Athens, before guiding Tunisia’s Esperance to the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final in 2024.
Since taking over, he sustained Sundowns' signature possession-based style while adding a ruthless, transition-heavy defensive edge. He was lately nominated for the 2026 CAF Men's Coach of the Year award.

Player to Watch: Teboho Mokoena
Midfielder Teboho Mokoena is considered the heart of Mamelodi Sundowns team, having a stellar career since joining the club in 2022. Renowned across the continent for his immense work rate, tactical vision, and lethal long-range shooting capabilities, Mokoena has been the standout performer, either with Sundowns or South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
This week, Mokoena received massive critical acclaim, being shortlisted for both the 2026 CAF Player of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year awards.
