Festival-style football: a new model for Africa’s next generation

The TotalEnergies CAF Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2026 will move into a new era with the introduction of a festival-style competition model, a concept designed to place Africa’s best young footballers at the centre of a complete football environment.

Rather than staging matches across several scattered venues, the festival-style approach brings the key elements of the tournament together in one integrated setting.

Matches, training sessions, team operations, technical activity and player development will all take place within a centralised football hub, allowing teams to live, train, compete and learn in the same high-performance environment.

CAF has confirmed that this model will be introduced for its youth competitions, starting with the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 AFCON Morocco 2026.

The opening game, semi-finals and final of the TotalEnergies CAF U17 AFCON will be played at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat, for the other 30 fixtures will be staged at the impressive Mohammed VI Football Complex.

For the players, many of whom will be experiencing their first major continental tournament, the benefits are clear.

The format reduces travel demands, creates consistency in preparation and gives every team access to a professional tournament atmosphere. It is not only about winning matches, but also about giving young players the feeling of what elite football requires.

The concept also mirrors the direction of FIFA’s expanded youth competitions, where the global game is looking to create more opportunities, more matches and a richer development experience for young players. FIFA has described the expanded U-17 World Cup environment as a “festival of football”, giving technical observers a wider platform to assess tactical, physical and mental development.

For CAF, the festival-style model fits neatly with its vision to grow youth football across the continent. It allows the competition to become more than a series of fixtures. It becomes a football village, a gathering of talent, coaches, scouts, analysts and future stars.

At the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 AFCON Morocco 2026, the continent’s brightest prospects will not only compete for a trophy and FIFA U-17 World Cup qualification, but will also be exposed to an environment built to accelerate their growth.

It is a format designed for performance, education and opportunity, a celebration of African youth football and a platform for the stars of tomorrow.
