TotalEnergies CAF U-17 AFCON: Cyr Dertin Boulengue, Forever the First

Central African Republic’s Cyr Dertin Boulengue left an indelible mark on his country’s football history. For the first time ever, a Central African Republic team participated in the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations. As runners-up in the UNIFFAC zone, this Central African squad has written a new chapter in its story.
A First Time Marked by Learning
Three matches, three defeats. In terms of results, the Moroccan adventure ended abruptly in the group stage. But for Boulengue and his young players, the most important aspect lies elsewhere: learning, measuring themselves, and understanding what high-level competition entails.
“We came to a great school,” the coach said with clear-eyed honesty after the heavy 6–1 loss to Angola. “This is just the beginning of our learning process. This competition gives us valuable positives.”
The coach didn’t try to hide the team’s weaknesses: defensive naivety, lack of tactical discipline, physical shortcomings… But he mainly emphasised his players’ courage, who “gave it their all from the start,” even if it meant leaving spaces that the opponents exploited without mercy. This honesty reflects a man who knows his realities and is determined to build patiently.
A Forward-Thinking Philosophy
Because Boulengue is more than just a youth coach — he’s a builder. In charge of youth football development within the National Technical Directorate, he carries a vision.
“Since 2020, with support from FIFA, we’ve launched structured projects for both boys and girls.” In Bangui and in the provinces, development centres are being established, and a national academy is set to open in September.
The aim is clear: build on this first participation to lay solid foundations. That involves better scouting — in neighbourhoods, training centres, and even among the diasporas.
“We can’t continue with only local players. We also need to bring in those playing abroad,” he stresses.
Passing on the Experience, Inspiring Others
The Central African U-20 team is set to take part in their own TotalEnergies CAF U-20 AFCON in Egypt (26 April to 18 May), and the coach is calling for national unity among coaches.
“There’s no such thing as success without preparation,” he warns. He advocates for knowledge-sharing, a clear direction, and constant communication between technical teams.
“They say what’s great about being the first is that others will follow,” someone told him. And he takes that to heart. For him, future success will come from long-term work, a coherent national strategy, and above all, unwavering belief in the potential of Central African Republic youth.
“CAR can achieve something. We’re not here just to take part. Reaching the quarterfinals in the coming years would already be an excellent result.”
A Symbol of Resilience and Hope
Cyr Dertin Boulengue embodies the quiet yet determined renewal of Central African Republic football. In a country often tested by hardship, his voice is that of a coach who truly believes that sports education can change lives. His eyes are already set on the future: preparing better, particularly through international exposure; strengthening technical, physical, and mental foundations; and creating a winning culture.
