Ignore us at your own peril; That is the message Sweden-based Somalia midfielder Idriis Abdelwahab Aden is sending ahead of their debut at the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Algeria 2023.

The 16-year old, who is honing his skills at the IFK Uddevalla junior team in Sweden, says they are in Algeria to prove that Somali football is on the ascendancy, and will strive to put in their best effort at the tournament.

He spoke to CAFOnline.com on their preparations and expectations as they get ready to make their Continental bow.

What is your personal goal during the tournament?

My ambition is to help my team do well and we are working hard to show everyone that Somalia has a strong team. We are here to show that we can compete.

Your parents are definitely proud to see you come represent the country of their birth. What message did they give you before you came?

My mum and dad sent me here to represent Somalia to the best of my abilities. They encouraged me to do my best and give a good picture of Somalia on and off the pitch and this is what drives me towards this tournament.

Do you have a player that you look up to both in the continent and globally?

In Africa, my favourite player is Didier Drogba and I always aspire to be like him. Globally I love Cristiano Ronaldo.

What do you promise the people of Somalia during this tournament?

We promise the people of Somalia that we will strive to win this tournament and show a beautiful picture of our country on and off the pitch. We want to show that we can compete as well and we have what it takes to be on the top level.

Does becoming the tournament’s Most Valuable Player appeal to you?

Of course yes. Everyone wants to play and be the best and if I achieve it, then I will be really delighted. That remains a massive goal for me.

Your parting shot as Somalia prepares for the first match?

I ask our fans to keep supporting us, pray for us and we will not let them down. We will put our best effort.
