TotalEnergies U17 AFCON: Tearful Niati disappointed not to beat Algeria

Congo’s Abiga Wamba Niati was dejected after they failed to earn a win over hosts Algeria in their second Group A match at the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Algiers on Friday evening.

Congo saw their 1-0 lead, with the goal scored by Niati, slashed by Algeria as the two played to a 1-1 draw.

But, the single point was enough to send them to the last eight as one of the best two third placed teams.

“We played according to the coach’s instructions and scored, but unfortunately we couldn’t see off the win,” Niati said after the match after being named the TotalEnergies Man of the Match of the game.

He added; “It was disappointing not to win but we will continue working for our objectives which is to qualify for the World Cup and try to win the title. We played a tough game against Algeria and we thought we had a chance to win.”

The youngster was overcome with emotion and broke down at the press conference, but was applauded by members of the media who acknowledged his performance.

Congo now switch their attention to the quarter finals and they will take on Group C winners Mali in Annaba.
