U-17 World Cup round-up: Burkina Faso edge Czech Rep, Uganda snatch historic point, Mali fall to Austria
African interest dominated the drama at the U17 World Cup on Saturday as Burkina Faso reignited their campaign with a 2-1 win over Czech Republic, Uganda earned a stoppage-time equaliser against Chile to claim a landmark point, while Mali slipped to a 3-0 defeat against an efficient Austria, who advanced to the last 16.
On a day that mattered for the continent, the Stallions showed resilience and set-piece quality, the Hippos’ never-say-die spirit was rewarded, and the Eaglets were punished for indiscipline against streetwise European opposition.
Group I: Czechia 1–2 Burkina Faso
Mohamed Zongo set the tone for the Stallions, drilling in a superb long-range opener after a high press forced a turnover on 27 minutes.
Czechia levelled quickly when Adam Novak released Vit Skrkon to finish on 30 minutes, but Burkina Faso restored control after the break as Zongo’s corner was powered home by Loukman Tapsoba on 50 minutes.
Ismael Zalle’s all-action display earned Player of the Match and, crucially, Burkina Faso managed the closing stages with greater composure than in their opener.
Coach Oscar Barro praised both urgency and improvement: “We are very satisfied with this result because we had to do everything we could to stay in the competition…
"In the first game, we were not as good defensively in the last 20 minutes and we paid for it. Today, we corrected that… The boys deserve congratulations tonight. They were very courageous.”

Group K: Uganda 1–1 Chile
Uganda’s Hippos delivered a moment to savour for East Africa as substitute Derick Ssozi struck in the 90+3 minute, moments after coming on.
Chile’s captain Bruno Torres—later named Player of the Match—had glanced in Antonio Riquelme’s free-kick in first-half stoppage time (45+3).
Uganda kept pushing and, deep into added time, a corner caused panic for Ssozi to smash in the equaliser and ignite jubilant scenes.
Coach Brian Ssenyondo hailed the response after a late collapse in their previous outing: “It feels good. I said last time that we should come back stronger. I liked the discipline of the boys, the resilience, the character, the attitude… Last time, they left sad… Today, we gave them the happiness.”

Group L: Mali 0–3 Austria
Mali’s Eaglets were undone by a composed Austrian side that sealed a historic first qualification for the knockouts. Johannes Moser converted a 36th-minute penalty, and Mali’s task worsened when Samba Konare was sent off for a reckless challenge. Hasan Deshishku added a crisp second on 61 minutes before Nicolas Jozepovic headed in at 90+5. Goalkeeper Dominik Dobis took Player of the Match after anchoring a disciplined back line.
The result leaves Mali with work to do—and a reminder that discipline and concentration are non-negotiable at this level.
