Egypt edge Chile in dramatic U20 World Cup clash but face anxious wait for progression

Egypt claimed a memorable 2-1 victory over hosts Chile in Santiago on Friday night but heartbreakingly missed out on automatic qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup knockout stages due to fair play rules.

The Young Pharaohs fought back from a goal down to secure a stoppage-time win, yet their disciplinary record proved costly as Chile advanced from Group A on a superior conduct score.

Vicente Alvarez gave Chile the lead midway through the first half, finishing a slick passing move with a precise low strike past goalkeeper Omar Sobhy.

Egypt nearly levelled before the break when Mohamed Abdalla’s curling free-kick rattled the crossbar.

Ahmed Abdin equalised two minutes into the second half, rising highest to head home an Omar Khedr corner and reignite Egypt’s hopes.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw until deep into stoppage time, when Khedr – Egypt’s standout performer on the night – produced a stunning free-kick that sailed into the top-left corner to seal a dramatic victory.

Despite the result, Egypt were left frustrated after learning that Chile progressed with a better fair play score — finishing with minus five to Egypt’s minus seven — based on yellow and red card counts.

Coach Osama Nabih praised his players’ determination but rued the fine margins that denied his side a direct place in the next round.

“We showed great spirit and character to come back and win against a strong host team,” said Nabih.

“It’s painful to go out this way, but I’m proud of how the boys fought until the end. We will wait and see if we can qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.”

Egypt, who lost their first two matches against Japan and New Zealand, now face an anxious wait to see if their three points will be enough to secure one of the tournament’s four best third-placed spots.
