Egypt fall to Japan in U-20 World Cup opener, Nabih confident of revival

Egypt’s campaign at the FIFA U-20 World Cup began on a disappointing note as they fell 2-0 to Japan in their Group A opener in Santiago on Saturday.

Despite a spirited display, the Pharaohs were undone by defensive errors and now face an uphill task in a group that also includes hosts Chile and New Zealand.

Rion Ichihara gave Japan the lead in the 29th minute from the penalty spot after Shunsuke Saito was brought down in the box.

Hisatsugu Ishii then punished slack defending three minutes into the second half with a composed finish from the edge of the area to double Japan’s advantage.

Coach Osama Nabih turned to his bench in search of a response, bringing on Mohamed El-Sayed and other fresh legs, but the Pharaohs struggled to break down a disciplined Japanese side.

The defeat leaves Egypt bottom of the group after Chile beat New Zealand 2-1 in the other match.

Speaking after the game, Nabih struck a note of cautious optimism: “We performed well, but we conceded two goals due to individual errors.

"I am confident we will improve against New Zealand. The beginning isn’t everything. There are positives, and the future will be better for this team.”

The Pharaohs’ next game on Tuesday against New Zealand is now crucial if they are to keep their knockout hopes alive.

For Egypt, discipline at the back and sharper decision-making in attack will be key to turning their fortunes around.
