Mali's U23 team will have another opportunity to compete for a place in the Olympic Games as they prepare to face Guinea in a play-off match at the TotalEnergies CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.

Despite their 4-3 loss in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw against hosts Morocco in the semi-final on Tuesday night in Rabat, Mali's coach, Badara Alou Diallo, praised his players for their display of character.

"It's frustrating because we had the potential to turn the game around during regular time. Penalty shootouts are always challenging, especially in such an intense atmosphere, but my players showed great character," expressed Diallo.

The coach acknowledged the advantage typically held by the home team in such competitions, as Morocco enjoyed strong support from their fans.

However, he emphasized that his team gave their all and demonstrated resilience throughout the match.

While disappointed with the outcome, Diallo remained optimistic about their chances in the upcoming play-off against Guinea.

He expressed confidence in his players' abilities and their determination to secure a spot in the Olympic Games.

Mali's U23 team will now shift their focus to the crucial match against Guinea, where they will strive to capitalize on their strengths and secure their qualification for the highly anticipated Paris Olympics.
