CAF Women's Champions League Morocco 2024: UWC Ladies vs Aigles de la Medina Match Facts

This is the sixth clash between teams from the COSAFA and WAFU regions, of their previous five meetings the teams from COSAFA have won them all.

Of the previous five clashes at the finals between teams from COSAFA and WAFU, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have been involved in four of these and the other game saw Green Buffaloes of Zambia defeat Determine Girls 4-0 in the group stages in 2022.

Over the previous five clashes between teams from COSAFA and the WAFU region at the finals teams from COSAFA have outscored them 12-1.

Both teams have begun the finals with defeats.

Four teams have proceeded beyond the group stages after losing their opening game, Malabo Kings in 2021, Simba Queens and Bayelsa Queens in 2022 and most recently AS FAR in 2023.

Defeat for either team will see them eliminated should the other game end in a draw.

University of the Western Cape FC

  • Lost their opening game against TP Mazembe suffering a 2-0 loss.
  • UWC failed to have a single shot on target in their opening game.  In 16 games at the finals involving South African clubs this was just the second time a South African club had failed to have a single shot on target. The other occasion was when Sundowns drew 0-0 with AS FAR in their final group game in 2021.
  • UWC are the first South African club at the finals to lose a group game, prior to their opening game loss no South African club had lost a game at the finals (W8 D1).
  • UWC goalkeeper Thandeka Princess Ngcobo made four saves in their opening game, she faced six shots in total. She saved the first four shots that she faced against Mazembe and conceded goals with the next two that came her way.
  • Ngcobo was one of three goalkeepers in the opening games of Group A to make four saves.
  • UWC’s Simnikiwe Mhlakaza made a game high four clearances against Mazembe.
  • No team from the COSAFA region has failed to win inside their opening two games at the finals previously.
  • UWC’s Molatelo Kobo created two chances in their opening game loss to TP Mazembe the most by a UWC player.
  • UWC’s Koketso Mamabolo won a game high joint 9 duels in their opening game against TP Mazembe, she was involved in a total of 10 duels.
  • In their opening game loss to Mazembe, UWC made a total of 276 passes, 135 of which were in the opposition half.

 

Aigles de la Medina

  • Lost their opening game 3-0 against AS FAR.
  • Had four shots on target in their opening game, the most by a team failing to score in the opening round of games in Group A.
  • They faced seven shots against AS FAR with goalkeeper Khady Faye making four saves.
  • Aicha Fall was involved in 18 duels in Aigles opening game defeat and won 9, the most by any of her team mates.
  • The only team from the WAFU region to fail to win their opening game and proceed to the Semi-finals was Nigerian club Bayelsa Queens in 2022, they lost their first game 2-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns but then defeated TP Mazembe and Wadi Degla to reach the Semi-finals before eventually ending in third place.
  • In their opening game against AS FAR, players from Aigles were involved in 98 they won 49%, they were involved in 11 Aerial Duels winning 54.5% of these.
