Different objectives for Sundowns and Athletico Abidjan in final Group A encounters
Two teams with contrasting objectives meet each other this Saturday at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly stadium, in Korhogo.
The former African champions, Mamelodi Sundowns face the hosts of this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League, Cote d’Ivoire 2023, Athletico Abidjan in the final round of Group A matches.
Already through to the semi-finals for a third successive season, Sundowns go into the clash with less pressure following their two victories, while hosts Athletico Abidjan face elimination from the competition and are in desperate need for the three points.
With the backing of the crowd in Korhogo, Athletico will be hoping to pull a surprise against the tournament favourites, who are also looking at finishing the group stages with an impressive 100% win record.
This is what the players had to say:
Kholosa Biyana - Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder
“So far we are executing our plan perfectly. The first objective was to qualify for the knockout matches. It's going to be another set of challenges in the next round. We respect Athletico Abidjan but we are competitors and we are not going to let the match slip away. We want to finish this group stage in first position”
Stéphanie Djakpa - Atlético d’Abidjan midfielder
“It’s not going to be easy. However, we keep our hope alive. Mamelodi Sundowns are the most experienced team in our group. We are going to play our best and rely on the Korhogo public who have always responded to back us up.
